My Mobile Life, written from my computer rather than my phone. I'd like to have more of a mobile life, but at this stage there's just too many things aren't quite right on a mobile device. I can post a message to here from my phone but I can't do all the other little bits like adding labels. I can't fully explore the back end of my blog.

On other apps there are a plethora of problems. Historypin or my phone managed to flip a photo, a modern overlay, on it's side. I couldn't delete it or turn it. On the phone or the puter. I had to 'report' my pic and the staff had to delete it for me. Took days. I hope no one tried to look at that pic and it's overlay while it was up. Other overlays I tried have been fine and Historypin is fun when it works properly.

I tried to create a new account on Twitter for an online mag I help with. Nope. Back to the big puter.

So, #23mobilethings? For a mobile life there's some way to go. As a mobile supplement to a desktop? Phabulous!

So now I'm doing the mobile version of 23 things. I'm up to thing 6 now. I probably should have been blogging earlier but I kinda lost this blog. The challenge here is writing from my phone. I want to put the url for the program in here but I can't remember it and don't know how to copy and paste from my bookmarks. More to figure out. I want to make full use of this phone. Or phablet. It's a Galaxy Note II. My precious! More later.

It was just a little site, 163 members and not very active. It was a family history site and appreciated by all of us who are connected. We were publishing resources and finds on there.

We use to be on Ning. Ning did the dirty on us and decided to kick out the smaller non-paying sites. That was a huge event. After a lot of research I took the site over to Grouply based on their sympathy and promises they wouldn't treat us the way Ning had. The also had a system to transfer all the data over to make it easy. It wasn't a totally clean transfer, some of the info ended up in strange places, but at least it was done. We set up and settled in. Our numbers grew, quite slowly but surely.

Then Grouply told us that Oodle was buying Grouply. They were 'very excited'. I bet they were. They probably got a packet for the sale. From the:

Grouply / Oodle FAQ

"How will the acquisition affect existing Grouply Groups and users? Online storage. Unfortunatly but not surprisingly after 4 years the expected changes have happened. Omnidrive doesn't exist anymore. Sounded good, pity it's gone. I searched for other free online storage and settled on 4shared. It's easy to use, quite intuitive so that's lovely. I don't need any online storage at the moment but a friend is about to teach a class in Gimp soon so I suggested she have her files stored online so she can access them from the course instead of carrying them around with her. At first we were going to use the free web space that comes from my ISP but seeing as I wanted to explore online storage we started an account for her to use for the class and for me to explore and see what it can do.

Even tho it's so easy it's still a little peculiar. There's an upload link at the bottom of the page that doesn't work, you have to use the one at the top. You can't edit files online unless it's a .txt file. The working page is set up like an email account and the top folder is where the files sit. There are 12 emails waiting for you when you sign in so that is a little unexpected.

You can edit images with Picnic. Nice, also easy, not as detailed as Gimp, but very nice for an online image editor.

Bottom line? I may find a use for all this, but I'll probably shop around a bit more and find one that has editing of more file types.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-44351187346318201292011-09-05T18:22:00.002+10:002011-09-05T18:26:28.890+10:00SkippingI'm not doing thing 31 because I don't like doing organising on the net. I'm doing this blog with a nic - I organise my life under my name. They don't cross over. And under my own name I don't organise myself via the net. Maybe one day. I use outlook calendar on my work puter and my own smart phone which for 'security' reasons I can't syncronise. I do miss the synch - had it in my last job via a work provided blackberry, but it's not happing in this job, via the net, or with this nic!

That would be needing more research than I'm inclined to do. They may be useful on one of my blogs, but most of the blogs I use these days have their own set of widgets and I'm quite happy with them. I know what they are and how to use them but there's also been a few bad reports about widgets installed that have been less that open and ethical.

I already have a Flickr account that I use quite a lot, but lets see what PhotoBucket can do...

I like the idea of creating an album of something that appeals to me. At the moment I've been interested in volcanos. I get Google news alerts for volcano so now I know when the volcanos around our planet all decide to go off. So now I'm creating an album of photos already on PhotoBucket that have volcanos in them.

Ok, it's easy enough to figure out how to copy to my album. Hover your cursor over the pic and a list of options appear at the top, one of them being 'Add to my album'. Cool. Ah! The options doesn't appear for all the pics! So I guess there are restrictions on some of the pics these days...

Here's my effort: http://s622.photobucket.com/albums/tt301/jayoval/

I'll keep adding pics as I go, and I think it's another thing to entertain my kiddies with. I think they'll like volcano pics!jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-45078005517554413542009-01-18T18:39:00.004+11:002009-01-18T20:27:44.694+11:00Moving on: Learning 2.1Moving onto Learning 2.1. http://explorediscoverplay.blogspot.com/

It's always a risk when going back to net technology that was written about in 2007 that the application won't be there anymore, or it's morphed to the point of not being recognisable. Luckily the first two are still there and working perfectly.

I love Zamzar, the online conversion tool. My file was emailed back to me within minutes even though they warned it could be 24 hours. You upload a file and pick what you want to convert it to, and the email it back to you. I'm going to make sure everyone at work knows about it because we do have students coming in saying they can't open odd files.

Letterpop is a way to create newsletter format online files. I found it a bit fiddly because even though there were lots of templates I couldn't find one at first that gave me what I wanted. I'm now wishing there was a way to create a newsletter without using the templates. My own background image in particular. I was quite happy with it in the end and emailed the result to my niece, but it took me a while to get there.

Ah, going through all the templates (73 pages worth at 4 templates per page) I finally found templates near the end without background images or header images. The format can't be changed, but the images are all your own.

I read someone else's comment about not being able to delete a newsletter and you con only have 10 on the freeby version. This is the first time I've come across a web 2.0 version of shareware! Try before you buy, but it isn't meant to be an ongoing free web 2.0 thing. I'll make another newsletter later...jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-11650308300499017462008-12-24T09:19:00.002+11:002008-12-24T09:34:12.158+11:00KidsFinding amusements for the kids is something I like to do for my niece and nephew. They already know quite a bit about the net but I like to keep throwing things (not just net) to keep them interested and inspired. The two sites I sent them recently, just for amusement sake, are: http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/fortune.php Photo Fortune, a site that is a 3rd party tool on Flickr, gives a fortune and associated photos each day, and http://www.stardoll.com/en/ Stardoll the nearest I've ever come to buying a doll for her. Not that I played with it mind you, but apparently you can choose a 'star' and then choose fashion for her. Dress up dolls on the net. I figure these, while not the most interesting things on the net (hey they've been using APOD for years and that's way more interesting), simple entertainment in a different format is similar to letting kids read comics just to make sure they continue to read. Reading is good, the net is good. Encouraging the kids to get involved is always a good thing.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-63106785882485809322008-12-23T07:33:00.004+11:002008-12-23T08:00:57.918+11:00Running 23 ThingsThe best thing about getting into web 2.0 is that now that I'm in a workplace that is introducing the 23 Things program I'm in the fantastic position of being able to help others understand it. There are two of us running the program, the other fellow is mostly putting up the blog posts and keeping the blog running, I have rss feeds to each of the people who are in our pilot group and if they post that they are having a problem with something it's usually me who has the solution or suggestion. I'm delighted to find that some of the others in the group are offering help. Often it's little things such how to make a link clickable and sometimes people are just complaining about some of the usual such as ending up with too many passwords. A few never got started and at least one has freaked out and not got past the first post. I made phone calls to the 3 who didn't get started hoping to see if there was something I could say to jog them, but frankly I think we've lost them. The one who has freaked out would do it if I was sitting next to her, but we are not located close to each other.

We have limited support - I've heard someone senior to me express a lot of impatience with people who don't just jump in a learn new stuff by themselves. She's obviously one of those who do. So am I. I did the 23 things by myself as a way of filling in the gaps of what I already knew. I've found her Facebook page and I know she uses other stuff. The difference between us is that I understand that she and I are a bit unusual because we have so much curiosity and confidence. Most people don't. I also understand that of the ones who don't a big proportion of them can be encouraged to learn more and therefore gain extra confidence. There'll always be those who will never cope, but they are just as much a minority as we are.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-52805095336576373622008-12-19T06:47:00.005+11:002008-12-19T07:10:46.165+11:00Way more than 23I like blogging, and I know it's been a while since I wrote on here, but I only just realised I don't need to stop just because I finished the 23 things program. There's lots of things I've done since and lots still coming out in Web 2.0.

Social Networking. I really didn't want to do this at first, seems so 'vanity', but I've finally decided it doesn't have to be. I got onto Ning and created a small social networking site for my very distant cousins, all descendents of Henry and Susannah Kable. It's rather quiet, but it is a space where people doing research and having difficulties can find info or ask questions. There will be a flurry of activity and then it'll go quiet for a while. Some find it a problem that it's so quiet, but it doesn't worry me, I think a social network will develop according to how people use it and if the people using it are not the sort who like to chat in public (forums) then it will be a quiet network. I just find it amazing that I could create a space for them and 80 cousins joined up!

I eventually got a Facebook page. Not very fussed with it. I know some people really get into it, but I don't make 'friends' with people I don't know so I think I only have 8. For me it's a place I can chat with my niece sometimes. She's generally the only one who is ever online at the same time as me.

I joined up with Friends because I found an old friend of mine on there, and eventually found another one, but that's all. The interesting thing about that experiment was that I realised my memory of high school and the 'gang' I used to hang with wasn't remembered the same as the other two I found. I remember us as a mini gang of odd ones out - me, the smallest one in the school, the allergic one, the discontented fat girl and the two Italian sisters. We use to lunch together away from the rest of the kids most days. Some of us did other things on some days. I think I'm the only one who remembers everyone. I haven't found the sisters so I'm not sure what they remember. All four of them were so important to me. They were the only ones I could hang with comfortably at a very difficult time of my life. After being very surprised I'm just philosophical about it now - memory is a strange thing, especially when involving a bunch of 12 - 13 year old girls who are all going through difficult times!

So for me, social networking has it's uses and disappointments, and quite possibly it's a generational thing.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-86724192872941540042008-04-13T17:57:00.002+10:002008-04-13T18:36:59.530+10:00Rainbows and thunderThere was a huge full arc rainbow this afternoon! One end of it was doubled. Makes up for the huge storm and thunder that shook the roof of the house and made me turn everything off for the duration.

The problem with this time of year is that the grass never dries. It's just not hot enough. It is a very green world right now.

Don't you love this area? We cleaned out a kitchen cupboard and found redbacks in a box at the back. Watch out for those dark corners. The good news is that after years of thinking redbacks kill people I found out a while back that it's highly unlikely that would happen. The main problem with the bloody things is the extreme pain and how it doesn't go away. It's debilitating and persistent and it's hard to function which is why they have an anti-venom. Took it off by the time I got to work, only needed it for while before the temperature came up.

I'm pretty sure I could see the International Space Station the past couple of days. It just looked like two small stars but when we looked through the binoculars there was just a faint line connecting them. Very faint. And I hope it was the space station because I can't think what else would look like that!jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-63714578298956857692007-11-25T09:07:00.000+11:002007-11-25T09:49:02.870+11:00Kindle and gadgetsKindle and Amazon seem to be getting a lot of people excited. They have sold out of the current batch of Kindles. In a lot of ways I can understand why. It looks like it's easy to use, a good size and with extra storage could hold a lot of books / documents. The ability to use the mobile phone network to get the books you're interested in is interesting! It seems to be easy to read. The items you chose from Amazon are listed in their / your library on Amazon so you can download them again if you need to.

The problems as I see them are only able to connect in America, no images, limited storage space and limited functionality. Adding an extra memory card is useful, but it doesn't solve most of the problems.

Some years ago there was so much touting of the idea that in general 'the people' didn't want several gadgets for several functions. One gadget was wanted that could do everything. This pushed a rash of development into the UMPC and some of those are pretty wonderful. They didn't take off in a big way. You can still get an ultra mobile but they don't appear in the shops as such and they are quite expensive. Every one of them that came out always seemed to miss out on one thing, whether it was the ability to make phone calls or something to do with connectivity, for example you could do wifi but not bluetooth (or the other way round). And sometimes the amount of storage just isn't inspirational. I can't see the point of getting an ultra mobile with 20 or 40 GB when my music player had 40 and I'd filled up 11 by the time it died. If I'm getting more functionality I want more storage.

A lot of people didn't like doing general computing on such a small screen. As I still haven't had such a small form factor in my hands to play with I can't give an opinion on that. I tried reading text on my music player but that was so small I ended up getting eye strain.

I'm one of the people who still wants one great gadget. I want everything including phone, camera, internet general computing, images and video, music, books, organising, decent storage and probably more on one device. I can't justify it yet. I keep an eye on the devices as they come out but the ones that seem to be getting close to what I want are very expensive. I already have a phone and access to a (fantastic) digital camera, a pc at home and I can buy a laptop for Aus$6-700 so why would I spend over Aus$2000 for something else ... that probably won't satisfy in the end. I feel quite pessimistic. At the very least I'll probably end up with the latest windoze and have to wipe it and load linux, and as such a huge part of the expense for these gadgets is the dozy operating system it feels like a waste of money. And knowing linux and the general idea that it always copes best with hardware at least six months old I may not get it to work properly anyway. At least for 6 months. And I'm not knowledgeable enough to write the drivers and programs I'd need.

So, probably for the next few years, I'll have a basic phone, access to a great camera, a pc at home that I've built myself, and a laptop that I can use for music, video, reading, organising myself and general computing. I will do internet either on the laptop when I'm out or on my pc at home. I can sync my organising with the pc, laptop and pc at work. At least with a handy usb stick. I'll make phone calls with my basic phone. Take photos and load them onto each computer as I want. Use the computers as backup for each other... Could be worse - I could be using a PDA as well.......................................jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-38742909334407188082007-11-18T08:42:00.000+11:002007-11-18T09:38:10.344+11:00#21 Podcasts, Smodcasts!I've been using podcasts for a couple of years. My favorite is Escape Pod which is all science fiction short stories. I used to download and listen to them on my ipod before it died. Listening to podcasts on my puter is a bit of a chore because I'm still on dialup. Using Podcast.net I found a few others and put them on bloglines. This: http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/EscapePod/~5/185595989/EP132_SparksInAColdWar.mp3 is the one I'm waiting on loading while I'm writing this. The other thing I'm doing lately to keep myself occupied while waiting for things to load is reading an online book from Google Books. I'm forgiving Google Books for all their earlier failings because I've just figured out how to narrow a search to full text only. Without that it useful as an index to monographs and I've found several references to subjects I'm interested in contained in books that I could then borrow to get the full story. It's always been one of the gaps in library services - no comprehensive index of monographs.

I like to keep an eye out for references to a favorite singer. Lots of journals are indexed and I've found plenty of references and kept up on my reading. Since Google Books came along I've found some reference tools, which I probably would have found and they have indexes so I would have found the references. Having an online index is quicker. And the ones that aren't in my own work library I can get on inter-library loans.

The huge advantage is references inside other books, biographies, memoirs, etc. These often don't have indexes. Even if they do there are some I would never have thought to look in because I would never have dreamt there was a connection with my singer. I am now a total convert to Google Books as a reference tool and finally to find a few full text online. Detest the sponsored links: I'm reading "Confucian Feminist: Memoirs of Zeng Baosun (1893-1978)" and the sponsored links are Chinese Girls For Dating and Love with chinese women. And they think they are targeting with their sponsored links. It's like targeting with a lump of 4 by 2. I really wish I could download the book. At this stage reading while I'm waiting to download something is fine, but when I finally get broadband I won't be wanting to read so much. Downloading and reading offline on a laptop maybe on a train on the way to work would be more attractive.

The problem with Google Books is the terrible quality. There are several pages in the book I'm reading that are so bad I have to skip them altogether.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-33970633598616431032007-11-18T08:34:00.002+11:002007-11-18T08:39:13.578+11:00Revver videoFrom Revver. For me personally, when I'm looking for medical information, I want narrow results instead of broad.

The City Guides and Events etc are only of interest to Americans.

The Cocktail builder was a lot of fun. I think I need to go buy more alcohol now. This is a good thing, really!!! I can definitely see a use for this in my library and all the staff agree! It will have to be locked cupboard that only the staff have keys to and I suspect there'll be arguments over the best way to arrange things and if it should be visible on the catalogue. I'm all for shadowing those records.

And my great niece and nephew love fuzzmail, but I don't really have the creative bent to make the best of it.

Maps I always love. I usually use Whereis, but Google Maps is lovely too, and the satellite and hybrid variations a fun. I was trying to figure out where I took a photo some time ago and the maps weren't working so I used the satellite images to 'drive' there and even found the building I'd photographed. Switching to map then gave me the suburb name. I like the idea of creating specialty maps with Wayfaring and it reminds of an mailing list discussion I was a part of some years ago where someone had said they were coming to Sydney and wanted to know where the best coffee was! A map everyone could contribute to would have been handy.

I'll continue exploring. I know there's more I'll like. Oh did you say start with one? Couldn't do that.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-28499534802341736642007-11-03T10:57:00.000+11:002007-11-03T11:15:33.640+11:00The Librarians on ABCI did not like The Librarians. I think the writers made some basic mistakes starting with making the main character horrible. If the main character was someone else having to cope with a horrible character it would have been easier to watch. We all know there are horrible people working in libraries as there are in any other field, but who wants to watch a whole program about them?

Next is that they have obviously heard some stories about what goes on in libraries but I don't think they did their research terribly well. It was all a bit ordinary.

How about simply knowing basic workplace stuff? As if anyone would get away with being so blatantly racist in this day and age and in a senior position! Certainly racism exists but no one would be game to be so blatant! They'd be hit with anti-discrimination in about 5 seconds flat. Especially because it was a public library, that means government you fools, no one would get away with it.

And that team building scenario? Where one of the staff is suppose to end up crippled? For goodness sake as if any team building company would take risks like that. Their insurance companies wouldn't let them.

And obviously some of the people working there are not librarians. A couple of them would have to be Library Technicians!! Calling the show "The Library" would have been better! Of course.

The interesting thing is that those of us who do work in libraries have been talking for weeks about all the different scenarios that we know of and have been involved in. They are genuinely funny and very reality based. If the writers had talked to enough of us they'd have enough to keep a series going for years.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6621461306407535713.post-16287916956659869852007-11-03T10:41:00.000+11:002007-11-03T10:51:42.426+11:00I'm still playin with other apsI haven't decided which ap I'll write about for no 19 yet so I'll just blather on a bit.

I still like Zoho Sheet. Created another sheet and graph, for the same data as the last one, but organised by employer group this time:

I don't like not being able to edit the colours - silly thing has put 2 shades of yellow together!

Quite a few people at my work have shown an interest in Learning 2.0 and even though it isn't endorsed to do it at work I think people are deciding to do it in their own time. I hope they're not doing it at work, I could be getting people into trouble!!

ps, I like the 'labels' on here better than tags because we can use phrases instead of single words.jayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16872525819165235265noreply@blogger.com0
